For senior Bo Xin Zhao, high school has been about more than academics, it’s been about service, voice, and impact. From debate tournaments and speaker forums to student government leadership, Bo has spent this time at É«ÇéAPPµ¼º½ growing as a thinker, speaker, and changemaker. This fall, he’s headed to Harvard University, where he’ll bring his many interests - and his powerful voice - to the next level.

What inspired you to run for student government?

I initially joined out of freshman energy. I wanted to represent my class, even in a small way. But over time, I realized how much courage it took and how fulfilling it was to have the honor of representing my grade. That’s why I later ran for the Executive Council.

How did SAS support your passion for debate?

The academic environment here encourages exploration beyond textbooks, which goes hand in hand with debate. We tackle motions on everything from social justice to economics and international relations. That environment at SAS has been really conducive to growing as a debater.

Can you share how older students like Hanjing and Dora inspired you, and how you've tried to do the same for others?

I think that's something I realized being a student here at SAS: that really every single thing we do isn't just in isolation with ourselves but is also supported by so many people who have come before me. Literally, whether it's debate or just college applications, I stand on the shoulders of giants. In student government, this meant being a freshman or sophomore inspired by the president at the time; in debate club and honor societies, it was being inspired by these leaders who were truly dedicated and passionate about their respective passions. I think it’s left a mark on me, and it also inspires me to try to inspire others in the hopes that maybe there might be some spark of passion or joy in whatever they want to do in the future.

You mentioned you're still exploring future careers. What are your goals after university?

I want to use my own dedication and creativity in a way where my hard work might lead to some positive change. Of course, that can take many forms, and that’s something I’m very excited to discover and pursue in the future, because that’s what I think life is all about. So right now, I’m not exactly sure what the career will be, but I think it’s something in that direction.

What will you miss most about your life in É«ÇéAPPµ¼º½?

I’ll definitely be missing my grandma’s dumplings and all the Chinese New Year traditions, but I hope to return to É«ÇéAPPµ¼º½ from time to time for those things.
